A Quick Orientation to A Course in Miracles

A Course in Miracles (ACIM)

How can I describe ACIM?!? The book itself (which consists of 3 volumes: the text, the workbook and the manual for teachers) can look overwhelming and my goal today is to reassure you that there is no need to be overwhelmed. After several years of devoted study, I have done the workbook (365 lessons designed to correct our faulty thinking and realign us with the thinking of God), I have read the Manual for Teachers which is quite brief, and I have read about half of the text which is rich, rich, rich and I can only eat it in small bites. There are a few versions of ACIM which I will link here, but I study the Foundation for Inner Peace version. Choose whichever resonates for you.

There is a cornucopia of shorter, easy to read books that are excellent reviews of and introductions to ACIM. I will offer a few for your consideration today.

The first and most acclaimed book on A Course in Miracles (ACIM) is by Marianne Williamson called A Return to Love.  This book was made popular by Oprah back in the 90s and it is truly wonderful.

I also enjoyed Holy Shift! 365 Daily Meditations from A Course in Miracles by Robert Holden, Living A Course in Miracles: An Essential Guide to the Classic Text by Jon Mundy and A Course in Miracles Made Easy: Mastering the Journey from Fear to Love by Alan Cohen.

Finally, Gary Renard has written a series of his own channeled books which address ACIM starting with Disappearance of the Universe.

There will be additional blog posts regarding the contents of the books I am linking here. I look forward to hearing your impressions. Happy reading!

  1. Hello Michelle,
Really loved your site! At first, I did not understand what Sugar Sobriety is or how does it relate – the two words together ‘get you’! And I really like it!
A course in Miracle is one of the things I have been wanting to do for several years, never got around to it! Reading your post on it gave me some more push! Thanks!
Would love to hear some more of your recommendations from your spiritual journey!

    • Hi Orion – Thanks for commenting.  YES, the connection to A Course in Miracles is subtle SO FAR.  Sobriety from any substance is really a spiritual journey.  It was my study of ACIM that lead me to drop alcohol and heaven knows I need a miracle to stay off sugar!  Yours in miracles, Michelle

  2. I’m a little slow on the uptake here, Michelle, but I don’t understand what is meant by Sugar Sobriety ? How it links in with your article.
I do believe in miracles, big-time. Believe that they occur when it’s God’s will.
Why would I want to take this “course?”Why would I want to take a course in miracles? Is it a course which actually tells you about miracles which have occurred over the years or is it more about helping one believe in miracles? What made you start the course. Am very interested but need to have a WHY before starting a journey. Thanks for your articles, Michelle.

    • Hi Roy! Thank you for commenting and asking your very excellent questions. Sobriety means more than abstinence. Sobriety implies an an acceptance that one is unable to abstain without help from a higher power and is willing to embark on the journey of personal/ spiritual growth required to remain substance free.

Regarding sugar sobriety, I intend to communicate that, for some of us, sugar is used like alcohol or drugs (to alter mood, avoid feelings, etc.) and cannot be “controlled” or stopped without help. It does not necessarily mean never eating sugar again for the rest of your life.

SOOOOO, the connection with A Course in Miracles is that it is the spiritual/personal growth path that helped me to get sober from alcohol and I just love it! It is not so much a “course” in the traditional sense. It is a channeled text in the voice of Jesus. The opening lines of the text are “This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time. The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.” So don’t worry – whether you ever touch the text of ACIM or not, you will learn the lessons one way or another. I am in no way trying to convince anyone to read ACIM, just sharing some gems and sharing my experience with it.

      All the best,
      Michelle

by David Hoffmeister communicates that everybody is God’s holy child. We are all equal. Even Jesus is our equal. A course in miracles message is that the physical world we seem to be in was not created by God, but is a delusion of our own making.
